Feather Market Centre
The new Feather Market Centre provides Port Elizabeth with a beautiful,
multi-purpose centre. Situated next to the historic city hall and post
office in down-town Port Elizabeth, the Feather Market is home to
prestige happenings, concerts, conferences and exhibitions. The complex
forms one of the cornerstones of the city centre buildings on Market
Square and will also be part of the future harbour development.
The history of the centre can be traced back to the 1870's, when the City
Council decided to construct a building for the then booming ostrich
feather industry. The Feather Market Hall was completed in January 1885.
Market Master John Conry conducted the first ostrich feather sale,
beginning with feathers owned by PW Court, possibly the first farmer to
suggest taming ostriches, instead of merely rounding up wild birds. On
the 10th of December 1885, Governor Sir Hercules Robinson officially
opened the market buildings with the opening of the South African
exhibition in the beautifully decorated, electrified market buildings.
A festival atmosphere ensued, and a public holiday was declared.
The South African exhibition lasted a full month and was visited by about 60
000 people. A chronological list of happenings in the past century in
the market buildings not only mirrors the history of Port Elizabeth, but
also of the whole western world. Redevelopment The market buildings
served the city well in the past century, but it lost it's former
glamorous role and went into degeneration. The city fathers once again
had to think seriously about the future use of these buildings. In
celebrating the commissioning of the redeveloped Feather Market
Centre, Port Elizabeth boasts a beautifully appointed multi-purpose hall
designed to serve as a concert hall, conference centre, city hall or as
a venue for other prominent functions. It draws its inspiration from the
Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Musikvereinsaal in Vienna. An
imposing two storey office building with access from Baakens Street has
been reconstructed as the foyer, with a grand staircase between the two
levels of the centre.
