THE COURSE
The course covers wilderness philosophy, concepts and the principles of management. The Participants will gain a good grasp of the importance of wilderness to society and its role as a Category I protected area. They will, therefore, be able to participate meaningfully in the various debates on wilderness conservation and related issues at the 7th World Wilderness Congress.
The course is presented by the Wilderness Action Group and the Centre for Environment and Development of the University of Natal. The facilitator team consists of experienced persons in wildlife and wilderness management and lecturers of the University.
There will be internationally recognized quest speakers who will give their perspectives on contemporary wilderness issues.
Participants will be given course manuals.
COURSE ACCREDITAION
The course is an accredited programme by the University of Natal. Those who satisfy the requirements will be awarded the University's short course certificate. The participants will be set group and individual work during the course that will be assessed by the Facilitators. In any event, all participants will receive an attendance certificate.
ENTRANCE QUALIFICATION
The entrance qualification for this course for this course will be at least four years experience in conservation management; experience in conservation management and appropriate diploma certification or a recognized four year university degree.
VENUE and TIMING of COURSE
The course will be held at the Zuurberg Inn on the boundary of the Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth ( South Africa ) with a field visit to the nearby Shamwari Private Game Reserve.
The course will be held from Thursday, 25th October, starting, with registration, at 09h30 at Shamwari to the 31 October, 2001 after the close of the course at about 16h30. Course Participants will be transported to Shamwari leaving Port Elizabeth at 08h00. Participants will be transported to Port Elizabeth to take up their Congress accommodation.

The course will be of value to anyone wishing to gain valuable insights into wilderness conservation before attending the Congress.
