Cape Town to Port Elizabeth
Pre-Congress -- Monday 29th October to Thursday 1st November 2001
Day 1: Departing Cape Town, we travel the spectacular coastal road towards Hermanus. Enroute we visit the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. As Hermanus is well-known for the Southern right whale, after checking into our hotel and enjoying lunch at a restaurant nearby, we try to see if we can spot any whales in the bay. We also visit the Hermanus's old harbour.
Overnight: Marine Hotel, Hermanus
Day 2: Today we enjoy a leisurely drive to Swellendam, the first magisterial district to be created outside of Cape Town. This small village nestling at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains has many beautiful historical buildings, including the Old Drostdy Museum. After tea, we continue to the seaside town of Mossel Bay, which owes its origin and growth to the seafaring trade. Here we visit the world-wide known Post Office Tree, under which, in the 15th century Portuguese sailors left their mail, and the Bartholomew Dias Museum Complex, for a look at the life-size replica of Dias's caravel, and the Khoi-San culture.
Overnight: Point Hotel, Mossel Bay
Day 3: This morning we travel into Karoo country, to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. We visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch, before a tour and lunch at one of the local Ostrich farms. This afternoon we visit the Cango Caves, one of the world's great natural wonders, where we will embark on a magical subterranean journey through massive caverns and fascinating limestone formations - nature's own sculptured works of art here. Continuing over the Outeniqua Mountains, we arrive in Sedgefield.
Overnight: Lake Pleasant, Sedgefield
Day 4: We embark on a journey on the Outeniqua choo-tjoe, a steam train that follows a picturesque route from Sedgefield to Knynsa. Situated in the Amphitheatre of surrounding mountains and the expanse of the Knynsa Lagoon, Knynsa is a treasure trove of interesting people and unusual places. We enjoy a mid-day cruise onboard a pleasure boat, which sails the lagoon and offers a close view of the Knynsa Heads, the two sandstone sentinels that guard the Knynsa lagoon from the roaring Indian Ocean breakers. After lunch, we continue towards Port Elizabeth " The Friendly City", driving through the heart of the Garden Route passing through forests and enchanted glens…We stop to explore the Tsitsikamma Forest, and visit a primate sanctuary, situated in the indigenous forest of the Tsitsikamma. Late Afternoon arrival in Port Elizabeth.
