South Africa --
Wildlands and Wildlife Management

Pre-Congress: Saturday 27 October - Thursday 1 November
Post-Congress: Friday 9 November - Wednesday 14 November

This tour is presented by EcoLife Expeditions, an extension program of the Centre for Wildlife Management, University of Pretoria, and is ideal for delegates wishing to get "behind-the-scenes" in the wildlife and wilderness circles in South Africa. We visit game ranches, wildlife breeding centres and the Kruger National Park, meeting with scientists and officials that are actively involved in the field throughout. The pre-congress tour will be accompanied by Prof. Wouter van Hoven of the Centre for Wildlife Management, University of Pretoria, and the post-congress tour by a highly qualified staff member.

Day 1: Depart 07h00 from Johannesburg. Travel across the Highveld towards the scenic Mpumalanga. Enjoy lunch at Pilgrim's Rest, an old mining village, visit God's Window with a spectacular view over the Lowveld, the fascinating Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon. Overnight at the Aventura Blydepoort Resort, overlooking the Blyde River Canyon, in comfortable chalets. Dinner at the resort.

Day 2: Visit the game ranch of Chris Mostert, specializing in breeding of buffalo, lion, and the rare white lions. Also breeding in sable antelope and roan antelope. Lunch will be enjoyed at the ranch. Overnight at Aventura Eco-Swadini in comfortable chalets, enjoying dinner at the resort.

Day 3: Visit Moholoholo wildlife rehabilitation centre. Lunch will be enjoyed at the nearby tea garden. After lunch we take a look behind-the-scenes at Kapama cheetah breeding station and meet with Dr. Peter Rogers, the project veterinarian. A night drive in Kapama Game Reserve follows, with the opportunity to view nocturnal wildlife. The evening ends with a bush barbeque under the stars in a traditional boma. Overnight at Aventura-Eco Swadini.

Day 4: Depart for Kruger National Park, entering through Orpen Gate. This is spectacular wilderness area and we enjoy game viewing en route to Skukuza where the night will be spent. Besides the "Big Five" a host of other mammal and bird species make game viewing in the Kruger National Park an incredible experience. Lunch will be enjoyed at Satara rest camp en route and dinner at Skukuza. Accommodation will be in comfortable chalets.

Day 5: An early morning game drive promises much wildlife activity for the early risers. After breakfast, we take a look behind-the-scenes at the holding bomas and capture kraals as well as the buffalo breeding program and rhino relocation underway in the Kruger National Park. Discussions with Kruger Park officials, scientists and veterinarians on diseases, wildlife ecology and the elephant management program. Lunch will be enjoyed at Skukuza and in the evening we end the tour with a bush barbeque in a private boma under the stars.
