Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

PRE-CONGRESS: Wednesday 24th October to Thursday 1st November 2001

Day 1: On arrival you are transferred from Cape Town International Airport to Steenberg Country Hotel.
Overnight: Steenberg Country Hotel, Cape Town

Day 2: Morning City Orientation Tour. Afternoon at leisure.
Overnight: Steenberg Country Hotel, Cape Town

Day 3: This morning, after a delicious breakfast, we travel to the fertile valleys of the Cape Winelands. The Winelands are surrounded by proud mountain ranges. The towns and villages have numerous historic homesteads and monuments. This tranquil and historic area produces some world-renowned wines. On this full day tour, a traditional South African lunch is enjoyed at Boschendal wine estates. 
Overnight: Steenberg Country Hotel, Cape Town

Day 4: Visit the shores of the Cape Peninsula. This full day tour takes you to the meeting place of the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. Highlights include the naval base at Simon's Town; Cape Point; Good Hope Nature Reserve with prolific plant, bird and animal life; a spectacular drive around Chapman's Peak; the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay and the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Day 5: Today we leave the "Mother City" and travel along the N2 to Swellendam, the first magisterial district to be created outside of Cape Town. This small village nestling at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains has many beautiful historical buildings, including the Old Drostdy Museum. After tea we continue to Mossel Bay, which owes its origin and growth to the seafaring trade. Here we visit the world-wide known Post Office Tree, under which, in the 15th century Portuguese sailors left their mail, and the Bartholomew Dias Museum Complex, for a look at the life-size replica of Dias's caravel, and the Khoi-San culture. After lunch at the Gannet, we travel through to Sedgefield.
Overnight: Lake Pleasant, Sedgefield

Day 6: This morning, we board the Outeniqua choo-tjoe, a steam train that follows a picturesque route from Sedgefield to George. Continuing via microbus over the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudsthoorn, we reach the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn. Lunch is enjoyed at a local ostrich farm. After lunch we explore the breathtaking Cango Caves, one of the world's natural wonders.
Overnight: Lake Pleasant, Sedgefield

Day 7: After breakfast we drive through to Knynsa. Situated in the Amphitheatre of surrounding mountains and the expanse of the Knynsa Lagoon, Knynsa is a treasure trove of interesting people and unusual places. We board a morning pleasure boat, for a cruise, which sails the lagoon and offers a close view of the Knysna Heads, the two sandstone sentinels that guard the Knysna lagoon from the roaring Indian Ocean breakers. After lunch we continue through the heart of the Garden Route, travelling through forests and enchanted glens…We stop to explore the Tsitsikamma Forest. We drive passed "The Friendly City", to Shamwari Game Reserve.

Day 8: Take the opportunity to visit the Born Free Conservation Centre; enjoy lunch overlooking the Bushmans River; see the "Big 5" on your game ride; and experience Kaya Lendaba, an African Arts and Cultural Village.

Day 9: Departing Shamwari Game Reserve, you are transferred through to Port Elizabeth Airport.
