Private sector wilderness - Members of the 7th WWC Governing Board have been making good progress on a new model of wilderness protection and sustainability. Privately owned wildlands in many countries contain a significant amount of de-facto protected areas. The use of conservation easements, especially in the United States, has proved a formidable tool to sustain wilderness values in perpetuity. Though no such incentive exists in Africa, several landowners are considering -- and beginning to act on -- other ways in which their private land can be forever wild. Changing title deeds, management plans, staff training and more are part of this new direction in which the private sector is stepping forward to sustain wilderness and wildlands. More to come at the 7th WWC….
Cultural program expanding rapidly - Plans for the 7th WWC cultural program grow more exciting by the day. Recent developments:
Music under the African stars -- Claire Johnston, founder of "Mango Groove" and one of the most recognized contemporary singers in Southern Africa (and an ardent conservationist) will headline a show on the World Wilderness Summit weekend. Claire is generously donating all her services for what will be a fantastic evening of music and entertainment for wilderness.
International Environmental Film Festival - Negotiations have just been concluded for a global environmental film festival featuring wilderness and wildlife, to run through the 7th WWC. With four venues, this film festival will be a daily occurrence, screening the best of an international slate of entries. Judges will award the top three winners during the Congress.
