The Eastern Cape, South Africa

The 7th World Wilderness Congress will convene in Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, a historic town on the Indian Ocean just a one hour flight from all South Africašs major cities (Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban). Safe and well-serviced, with a stunning beachfront setting, Port Elizabeth is very near the Addo Elephant Tsitsikamma National Parks, the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, and a world-class private game reserve and wilderness area. The Congress venues include both the beautiful and traditional Feather Market Hall, and The Boardwalk, Sun Internationalšs brand-new beachfront convention centre.

Plenary Program Update

For delegates, the 7th World Wilderness Congress brings a sense of place through an extensive mix of contemporary and traditional music and art, an international environmental film festival, outdoor events under the African skies, and ample opportunities (during, pre-, and post-Congress) to visit African wildlands and to be welcomed by local people.

Every evening during the WILDERNESS WORKING SESSIONS (5-8 November) the CULTURAL PROGRAM consists of music, films, and social gatherings that emphasize the arts and humanities of wilderness local communities, in traditional and contemporary settings.

  • International Environmental Film Festival

  • Gala Evening and Celebration - in honor of Africa, the roots of the WWC and the future of Wilderness;

  • Contemporary Entertainment Evening with a Concert featuring local musical celebrities;

  • African Campfire Experience - Storytelling around the campfire by celebrated storytellers (Ian Player, Creda Mutwa, Maladoma Some)

  • Africa on the Beach - the Mayor of Port Elizabeth hosts a sunset beach party;
