Resolution #18:

Title:
Landscape Approach As Wilderness Theme In Fragmented Ecosystems
Proposed by: Mohamed Bakarr
Seconded by:
Karen Ross

WHEREAS,

Though a significant proportion of the world's terrestrial ecosystems have been highly fragmented, these fragmented systems contain significant proportion of the Earth's biodiversity.

These fragmented ecosystems support the livelihoods of millions of people around the world.

Strict protection efforts are increasingly hampered by conflict with development efforts.

A broad, landscape-based approach involving wilderness concepts can enhance management effectiveness.

THEREFORE, the 7th World Wilderness Congress

Endorses the landscape approach as a tool in advancing wilderness areas stewardship in fragmented landscapes to protect biodiversity; and hereby

RESOLVES, that

Future Congresses will further emphasize the landscape approach, and create opportunities for effective dialogue and sharing experiences that promote and strengthen links between wilderness area management and protected area managers.
