Resolution #17:

Title:
Re-creation of Wilderness Areas in Great Britain
Proposed by: Toby Aykroyd
Seconded by:
Chris Blessington, Alan Watson Featherstone

WHEREAS,

Changes in agriculture over the last few years are rendering this form of land use increasingly uneconomic in substantial areas of upland England, Wales and Scotland, resulting in progressive disintegration of local communities and heavy expense of taxpayer subsidy

Restoration of wildland areas and values is becoming increasingly important and will be a major focus of wilderness work in the 21st century.

THEREFORE, the 7th World Wilderness Congress

Emphasizes that the restoration of Britain's wild heritage in general would catalyse wider support for re-creation of specific wilderness areas within industrialized countries, and reinforce the credibility of our assistance to developing countries in preserving their own wild lands and species; and hereby

RESOLVES, that

United Kingdom governments, academic institutions and NGO's evaluate, demonstrate and promote:

  1. The establishment of wilderness zones in appropriate areas on a scale sufficient to sustain the reintroduction of major species lost to Great Britain, including boar, beaver, lynx and bear
  2. The development of related eco-tourism, outward bound and educational activities that have a minimal environmental impact yet offer long term economic opportunity to local communities
