WHEREAS,
The Sunderbans area is the delta of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers,
and is shared by India and Bangladesh.
The Sunderbans supports an estimated population of 500 tigers, the most
viable gene pool anywhere on the sub-continent.
THEREFORE,
the 7th World Wilderness Congress
RESOLVES, that
As a vital and important element in the plans to secure the long term
survival of panthera tigris, the governments of India and Bangladesh work
immediately with UNESCO and place the Sunderbans on the register as a
World Heritage Site, and declare it the first transfrontier Peace Park in
