WHEREAS,
Multilateral and bilateral funding agencies such as the World Bank have
sanctioned funds in developing countries for major projects such as mines, dams, thermal
plants, commercial forestry, aquaculture, hotels, chemical complexes, etc, - inside or
within impacting distance of wilderness areas and for roads, railways and waterways
cutting through protected areas and whereas public hearings are not effectively held
thereon;
The 6th
World Wilderness Congress hereby resolves and calls upon:
- the World Bank and all major funding agencies to desist from financing projects that
directly or indirectly impact upon the wilderness areas in developing countries;
- scientists and leading conservation organizations play an active role in recognizing
these threats and in calling upon international funding agencies and the recipient
governments to desist from such environmentally disastrous projects
