WHEREAS,
Lake systems & wetlands including their tributaries sustain a complex bio-diversity
providing a habitat for innumerable species of flora and fauna;
Lake systems & wetlands are particularly vital for the survival of migratory
species;
The importance of lake systems & wetlands have been recognized under the Ramsar
Convention (UNESCO);
Lake systems & wetlands including their tributaries are increasingly compromised
and impacted upon by encroaching infrastructure and development activities, utilization of
both water reserves and natural resources; and hence
The pollution of water reserves provide an imminent threat to the bio-diversity;
The Global Nature Fund has initiated the proclamation of the "1st World
Lake Day" scheduled for the 15th November 1998, under the Living Lakes
Program, a network of lakes and wetlands which are of international importance;
The 6th
World Wilderness Congress resolves that:
- The proclamation of the 1st World Lake Day on 15th November 1998
is supported and it shall be an annual event to enhance the awareness of the importance of
preserving the integrity of Lake systems & wetlands, hence its bio-diversity;
- The creation of a network of lakes and wetlands, such as the initiative of the Living
Lakes Program under the Global Nature Funds advocacy, which provides a forum for
civil society organizations to address issues relevant to the sustainability of these
areas.
