Title:
Partnership with Wilderness Communities.

WHEREAS,

Certain communities have been living for generations in a harmonious and sustainable manner in natural ecosystems and whereas such communities are being displaced or deprived of their traditional resources by either so called development projects or even wilderness ‘protection’ projects;

AND WHEREAS,

The long-term survival of wilderness areas and of such communities requires a meaningful partnership being developed with such communities;

The 6th World Wilderness Congress hereby resolves that:

  • Central and local governments initiate the following measures to formulate and implement through discussion with social activists and local communities, an appropriate life-crop and livestock compensation system and locational and development policies and practices which will make local communities participants and not enemies of wilderness conservation;
  • Further resolved that all those whose lives and livelihoods are being impinged upon by the declaration and/or management of a protected area should receive full disclosure of information as regards proposed plans and activities and it should be mandatory that action is undertaken only after negotiation with all interested and affected communities.
